Job description:
Main Purposes

Performs skilled work in the quantitative chemical and biological analysis on water, process water, organic and inorganic solids and other processes. Manage and communicate test results to the Operations Manager for quality control and process control at the Recycling Plant. Assist in the preparation of technical and compliance reports.

Tests are performed to determine:

* compliance with contractual requirements

* compliance with regulatory requirements

* to provide process control data to allow optimal performance of the various processes on site

Responsibilities

 Perform sample collection where required. Samples to be collected could include percolate, digestate and compost like output from the Organics Treatment process; boiler water, process water, condensate and ash from the Advanced Thermal Treatment system; solid waste and various output streams from the Mechanical Treatment system.

 Operate laboratory equipment and conduct all required testing. Perform chemical, bacteriological, and physical testing on a wide variety of samples. Maintain test result records, and prepare laboratory reports to management. Work involves generating laboratory data and reporting results for use by others, including logging results in an agreed format on the MKWRP shared drive and preparing standard reports as required.

 Develop and maintain a Quality Control Manual for the MKWRP laboratory in line with industry best practice.

 Perform laboratory quality control. Calibrate or procure the calibration of the laboratory equipment as appropriate; perform quality control checks; analyse performance evaluation samples; keep testing records as specified in the laboratory's Quality Control Manual

 Provide training on laboratory procedures and equipment to plant operators and maintain a training schedule or matrix to record the training of all appropriate staff in the use of the laboratory.

 Perform testing to provide data to optimize plant processes that use chemical additions or produce process outputs (e.g. use of process additives in and production of biogas from the anaerobic digester)

 Maintain laboratory consumables and order laboratory supplies. Maintain laboratory instruments and equipment in good working condition to provide precise data and testing in a timely manner

 Manage the analyses that are undertaken by external laboratories (e.g. assessments of ash hazard status) and review and maintain the database of external laboratory reports.

 Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required

 Degree in Chemistry or Microbiology or a closely related field

Experience

 Experience in a laboratory analysing water or wastewater/solid samples or in a position equivalent laboratory technician in a processing environment
